The Mitsubishi Outlander is set to receive a facelift, with the latest development test prototype spotted in Japan with almost no camouflage, showcasing what to expect from the updated vehicle. While the exterior changes to the SUV are minimal, there will be more significant changes inside the cabin and regarding the mechanical specifications.
New spy photos released a few weeks after the official teaser images confirm that the exterior of the Outlander will remain largely unchanged compared to the fourth generation model that has been around since 2021. The vehicle is set to be unveiled in Europe on October 1 in Madrid, but the version destined for the Japanese market could arrive sooner.
Mitsubishi has already shown that the vehicle will feature updated LED lighting units on the upper headlights, retaining their external shape. The black strip on the grille conceals revised chrome lines, while the slightly camouflaged lower bumper areas suggest there may be some changes.
The prototype appears to have received a new Moonstone Gray Metallic paint. It is also resting on new 20-inch alloy wheels. The Outlander facelift was spotted on the Tomei Expressway on Honshu Island, Japan.
Interior updates will include a 12.3-inch infotainment system borrowed from the Nissan X-Trail, set to replace the smaller 8-inch and 9-inch units from the previous model. The vehicle will also feature better ventilated leather seats, higher quality materials, and an advanced sound system from Yamaha.
Mitsubishi has confirmed that the facelift will feature the latest generation of the 4×4 hybrid powertrain, likely providing higher power than the previous 248 horsepower. Meanwhile, the new battery will lead to significantly longer electric range. The previous model offered electric driving for 61 km. Mitsubishi engineers will also modify the chassis setup to improve ride comfort.
The refreshed model is set to go on sale in Japan this fall, with Mitsubishi's European branch confirming production will start in late 2024. The updated SUV is also expected to be available in the United States.
