BMW has recently issued one of the largest recalls of 2024, impacting 720,796 various vehicles. The primary issue arises from a potential electrical fault occurring under the hood, which could trigger a fire. Surprisingly, this electrical fault may originate from the water pump.
According to recall documents from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the company received a report of a 'fire incident' in January involving an unspecified vehicle in the United States. The investigation revealed additional incidents, prompting in-depth studies of the water pump and a specific electrical connector associated with it. BMW found that under rare circumstances, fluid from the water pump could reach the electrical plug and damage the solder. This could allow fluid to enter the plug, resulting in an electrical short.
This issue has occurred in multiple vehicles, leading to the recall, with BMW noting 18 recorded cases in the form of complaints or actual damages. Fortunately, the automaker is not aware of any injuries or accidents due to the defective plug. The recall affects a wide range of BMW vehicles produced from 2012 to 2018.
- Here is the list of specific models under recall:
BMW X1 sDrive28i / xDrive28i models from 2012 to 2015.
BMW Z4 sDrive28i models from 2012 to 2016.
BMW 528i / 528i xDrive models from 2012 to 2016.
BMW 328i / 328xi models from 2012 to 2016.
BMW X5 xDrive 40e models from 2016 to 2018.
BMW 228i / 228xi models from 2014 to 2016.
BMW 428i / 428i xDrive models from 2014 to 2016.
BMW 328xi Gran Turismo models from 2014 to 2016.
BMW X3 sDrive28i / xDrive28i models from 2013 to 2017.
BMW X4 xDrive28i models from 2013 to 2017.
BMW 428xi models from 2015 to 2016.
The repair process will be relatively simple, as BMW will inspect the water pump and the defective plug and replace them if any damage is found. A protective shield will also be installed to prevent fluids from reaching the plug. Notifications to dealers regarding the recall have already begun, and owners of the affected vehicles will start receiving notifications on October 4.
