Volvo's latest infotainment system, first featured in the heavily updated 2025.5 XC90 and 2025 EX90 electric newcomer, is now available to owners of older models.
In announcing the new system on Wednesday, Volvo stated that owners of vehicles built as early as 2020 will be able to upgrade to the new system free of charge. The system will be available via an over-the-air update for vehicles equipped with Google built-in.
Volvo indicated that around 2.5 million vehicles globally are eligible for the upgrade.
The new system is still based on Google's Android operating system, but it is simpler to use than the previous version, allowing quicker access to frequently used apps and controls, all now conveniently presented on the home screen.
Volvo provided the example that drivers no longer need to exit Google Maps during navigation to turn on a media player.
Another new feature enhancing user experience is a contextual bar, which provides relevant information based on the current situation and displays the most recently used apps. It also shows the camera monitoring icon whenever the vehicle is driving at low, parking speeds.
This system also simplifies the process for owners of plug-in hybrid Volvos to switch drive modes, as there's a dedicated icon on the home screen.
Volvo's Chief Product and Strategy Officer Erik Severinson mentioned that the automaker plans to continuously enhance the user experience for both new customers and owners of older vehicles, indicating that future updates are likely.
