Volkswagen has officially launched the GTX version of its smallest electric vehicle, the ID.3, a fully electric hot hatch with rear-wheel drive and a maximum power output of 322 horsepower. The car will be available in two different versions, one standard and one high-performance, to offer varying power levels.
Both versions are equipped with sporty accessories and promise high efficiency and impressive range. The vehicle exhibits dynamic performance and features an interior rich in the latest technology and safety systems.
The ID.3 GTX is powered by a rear-axle electric motor generating 282 horsepower. The performance version increases the power output to 322 horsepower, making this electric hatchback more powerful than the Golf R and even most turbocharged V6 engines from Volkswagen.
Despite these impressive power figures, the ID.3 GTX does not accelerate as expected. The base model reaches 100 km/h in 6 seconds, while the performance version does so 0.4 seconds quicker. These estimates are preliminary, so we may see even more impressive numbers later. For comparison, both the Golf GTI and R models reach 100 km/h in 5.1 seconds and just over 4 seconds, respectively.
However, Volkswagen claims that the ID.3 GTX provides astonishing acceleration due to the instant responsiveness of the electric drive motor. The top speed of the GTX is 178 km/h, while the performance version is limited to 200 km/h.
Volkswagen has made numerous updates to ensure that the driving experience of the GTX is more thrilling than that of the regular ID.3. The steering system has been tuned for greater precision. The car utilizes a McPherson front suspension, while the rear features a multi-link suspension system that provides exceptional comfort, stability, and control. The GTX also received firmer dampers and a specially tuned suspension.
The performance version also comes standard with an adaptive chassis control system (DCC). Using the latest software, the system better understands how the wheels and body of the car move and can adjust the dampers accordingly. The driver can choose from four driving modes: Eco, Comfort, Sport, or Individual.
Volkswagen can now offer its customers a hatchback with front-wheel drive, the Golf GTI; rear-wheel drive with the ID.3 GTX; and all-wheel drive with the Golf R.
The GTX models feature a new 79 kWh lithium-ion battery. Based on European WLTP cycle estimates, Volkswagen claims the electric vehicle can cover a distance of 600 km between charging station visits. Charging has become easier than ever, thanks to the addition of a thermal management function that preconditions the battery before charging. This means that the battery reaches the optimal temperature when arriving at the charging station, allowing for faster charging and reduced wait times.
When connected to a DC charging station, the ID.3 GTX can charge at speeds of up to 175 kW, allowing the battery to be replenished from 10% to 80% in about 26 minutes.
The ID.3 GTX features a unique front bumper with A-shaped air intakes. The diamond pattern design gives the front end an understated aggressive character, supported by arrow-shaped daytime running lights. The LED headlights are standard and are connected by a thin LED strip. It is available with optional 20-inch Skagen wheels with diamond accents or black finishes. The GTX standard version comes with 215 tires, while the performance version benefits from wider 235 tires.
At the rear, there is a unique GTX rear diffuser with the same diamond pattern. The LED taillights are part of the package, including dynamic turn signals and elegant nighttime lighting design. The vehicle is available in five colors including: Moonstone Grey, Grendela Black, Glacier White, Scale Metallic Silver, with an optional glossy black trim.
Inside, the GTX models feature supportive sports seats adorned with a mix of recycled 'Lurus' fabric and leather. The black seats receive a pop of color from red stitching and contrasting trim. Customers can also opt for ergoActive seats with electric adjustments, built-in headrests, and adjustable thigh support. The interior features wool upholstery and unique red accents.
The ID.3 GTX will utilize a 12.9-inch entertainment system that now includes ChatGPT functionality as part of the IDA voice assistant. An augmented reality display and wellness application will be available for an additional cost.
