Honda has launched a hydrogen fuel cell version of the CR-V named CR-V e:FCEV. This compact crossover appears different from current CR-V models, featuring a unique rear design and an 18-inch display. The vehicle also comes with black ten-spoke wheels.
The hydrogen fuel cell-powered crossover also benefits from a full underbody cover and a distinctive front wing, enhancing aerodynamic efficiency. This is the first model resulting from the collaboration between Honda and General Motors, significantly reducing the costs associated with fuel cell technology by up to two-thirds compared to traditional fuel cell systems.
The CR-V e:FCEV is powered by a single electric motor producing 174 horsepower, mounted on the front axle. Honda promotes that this vehicle provides a driving experience similar to that of current CR-V models. To achieve this, the company has increased the rear lateral stiffness by 10% and the rear torsional stiffness by 9%. Similarly, the front and rear multi-link suspension systems have been re-tuned with special springs and sensitive shock absorbers, along with stabilizer bars.
The vehicle offers Normal, Eco, Sport, and Snow driving modes, but the absence of acceleration and top speed figures suggests that it may not deliver impressive acceleration. A key feature of the FCEV is its dual use of traditional hydrogen fuel cells and an additional electric system, something that no other FCEV has done before. This means that when there is no hydrogen refueling station nearby, drivers can simply plug in at any charging station to recharge, allowing for nearly 50 km of all-electric driving.
Similar to other CR-V models, the dashboard features a honeycomb design that cleverly conceals the air vents. Only one variant of the vehicle will be offered, named Touring, which will come with a 10.2-inch digital driver display and a 9-inch high-definition touchscreen infotainment system. It will also be equipped with a wireless phone charger, a Bose sound system with 12 speakers, and wireless Apple CarPlay/Android Auto.
Additionally, the front seats feature adjustable heating, the steering wheel is heated, and there is dual-zone climate control. The vehicle also includes a hands-free power liftgate, parking sensors, and leather upholstery.
