In a highly anticipated reveal at the Beijing International Auto Show, Mercedes has officially launched the all-electric G-Class. This innovative vehicle is equipped with four electric motors, one for each wheel, providing remarkable off-road capabilities that may surpass those of traditional gasoline and diesel G-Class models in various aspects.
Astonishing Performance Metrics for the Electric G-Class
The Electric G-Class retains the beloved boxy design language of the standard model, with significant updates concentrated under its chassis. The standout features include four electric motors producing a total of 579 horsepower and an impressive torque of 1164 Nm, making it the most powerful G-Class variant available, surpassing the AMG G63 by 2 horsepower and 314 Nm of torque.
These electric motors allow the hefty vehicle to accelerate from 0 to 97 km/h in just 4.6 seconds, which is approximately 0.4 seconds faster than the AMG sporty version, although its top speed is limited to 180 km/h.
A Veteran on Tough Terrain
The Electric G-Class is designed with serious off-road capabilities, featuring the ability to wade through 33.5 inches of water, which is 5.9 inches better than the standard gasoline and diesel G-Class models.
Additionally, the electric version can ascend slopes of 45 degrees and offers an impressive ground clearance of 9.8 inches. One of the most notable features is its ability to turn in place at a 360-degree angle, thanks to its motors distributed across all wheels, allowing for effortless maneuvering in tight spaces.
However, the electric range is somewhat disappointing due to its boxy design, which causes air resistance, estimated at about 402 kilometers. These figures are not final, and Mercedes has indicated that the vehicle supports fast DC chargers that can charge 70% of the battery in just 32 minutes.
Interior Design and Exclusive First Edition
Inside, the design is clearly inspired by the standard G-Class, featuring a 12.3-inch infotainment screen and a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, equipped with a "transparent hood" technology that uses a 360-degree camera to monitor the surroundings, including the terrain directly below the front for precise navigation.
Mercedes plans to launch an exclusive first edition of the Electric G-Class with features including 20-inch wheels, black accents on the exterior, and blue carbon fiber trim on the interior, along with G Roar technology that generates artificial engine sounds reminiscent of gasoline engines during acceleration.
The new Electric G-Class is set to hit the market in 2025, with pricing details to be announced later. Mercedes has also revealed plans for a completely new type of battery featuring a 20-40% higher energy density and improved range, set to launch a year after the vehicle's introduction.
