The United Arab Emirates has updated its traffic laws to reduce accidents, which, according to The Official Portal of the UAE Government, remain a leading cause of fatalities. The country is preparing to implement new traffic regulations under Federal Decree-Law No. (14) of 2024, scheduled to take effect on March 29, 2025. These changes are part of the UAE’s ongoing efforts to modernize its legislative framework in response to advancements in transportation technology and global safety standards.
Overview of Federal Decree-Law No. (14) of 2024
As part of the UAE’s commitment to keeping pace with rapid developments in transportation, the updated law introduces key amendments that address emerging driving technologies, including autonomous vehicles.
Key Amendments in the New Traffic Law
1. Regulations for Autonomous and Electric Vehicles
The law establishes clear procedures for registering, inspecting, and renewing autonomous vehicles to ensure safety and legal accountability as self-driving technology becomes more widespread.
For electric vehicles (EVs), the UAE has simplified the registration and renewal process, reflecting the country’s commitment to sustainable and eco-friendly transportation.
2. New Driving License Requirements
The legal driving age has been lowered from 18 to 17 years. This change aligns with global standards and allows younger drivers to receive formal driving instruction earlier, promoting safer driving habits from an earlier age.
3. Stricter Penalties for Violators
Driving Under the Influence (DUI):
Alcohol: Anyone caught driving or attempting to drive under the influence of alcohol faces imprisonment and a fine ranging from AED 20,000 to AED 100,000. Additional penalties include:
First offense: License suspension for at least three months.
Second offense: License suspension for at least six months.
Third offense: Permanent revocation of the driver’s license.
Drugs and Psychotropic Substances:
Offenders face imprisonment and a fine ranging from AED 30,000 to AED 200,000.
Additional penalties:
First offense: License suspension for at least six months.
Second offense: License suspension for at least one year.
Third offense: Permanent license revocation.
Driving with a Suspended License:
Offenders face imprisonment for up to three months and a minimum fine of AED 10,000.
4. Enhanced Pedestrian Safety Measures
Pedestrians are prohibited from crossing roads where the speed limit exceeds 80 km/h unless a designated crossing is available.
Pedestrians who violate this rule will be held civilly or criminally liable for any accidents caused.
Stricter measures will be enforced to protect pedestrians from reckless driving and ensure they use designated crossings.
The UAE’s updated traffic laws introduce critical changes to enhance road safety, regulate modern vehicle technologies, and impose harsher penalties on traffic violators. These amendments emphasize pedestrian safety, responsible driving, and legal compliance to prevent accidents and fatalities. Staying informed about these regulations is essential to avoiding penalties and ensuring the safe and legal use of vehicles on UAE roads.
