Toyota recently shared its future strategy for the Brazilian market with its dealers, announcing plans for a new compact pickup. This truck is expected to debut in 2027 and will draw inspiration from the 2023 Toyota EPU concept, which features a hybrid powertrain and an all-wheel-drive option.
Since the full-electric EPU concept was unveiled in 2023, speculation about developing a hybrid production version has been rampant. Toyota executives have publicly acknowledged their interest in competing with Ford's Maverick in the U.S. market, although discussions are still ongoing. It now seems that the project has received the green light for South America, with the truck expected to hit Brazilian showrooms within the next two years. The new pickup is part of Toyota's $2.2 billion investment in the region, initially announced in March 2024. This investment includes the development of the TNGA platform, along with enhanced hybrid (HEV) and plug-in hybrid (PHEV) options to increase power output and provide all-wheel drive.
In addition to the compact pickup, dealers have been informed that Toyota plans to utilize the developed TNGA platform and new hybrid system for updated versions of the Corolla and Corolla Cross tailored for the Brazilian market. The electric setup is expected to be based on the 2.5-liter hybrid engine used in the Toyota RAV4, compatible with both gasoline and ethanol fuel.
The new truck is anticipated to take design cues from the EPU concept, although modifications will be necessary to accommodate the new platform. The expected length of the truck is 5070 mm, with a wheelbase of 3350 mm and a smart cargo bed that can expand its load-carrying capabilities. Positioned below the Toyota Hilux, this vehicle will compete against rivals like the Fiat Toro, Ram Rampage, Ford Maverick, and Chevrolet Montana.
It remains unclear whether Toyota will offer the small electric pickup in North America. However, based on previous comments from Toyota Motor North America's CEO Ted Ogawa, the main challenge lies in making the model affordable. Nonetheless, for the truck to have any chance of success in the U.S. market, it must be manufactured in the United States or Canada to avoid the 25% tariff on imported light trucks that has been in place since 1964.
