Toyota has informed dealers to cease sales of its latest and most sought-after three-row SUVs because a side curtain airbag may not deploy as intended during a collision. This stop-sale order is accompanied by a recall affecting approximately 145,000 Toyota Grand Highlander and Lexus TX vehicles from the 2024 model year, which is the only year these two new models have been manufactured.
The driver's side curtain shield airbag—positioned in the roof bar above the window to protect the head and neck—might not deploy correctly in certain collisions. Toyota indicates that the front section of the airbag may not unfold as designed, and some of the airbag could extend outside the window opening if the driver's window is rolled down.
A remedy has not yet been disclosed, but Toyota anticipates notifying owners of the necessary actions by mid-August.
Manufactured in Princeton, Indiana, the 2024 Toyota Grand Highlander and 2024 Lexus TX perform well in the three-row crossover SUV market. Toyota has reportedly sold nearly 49,000 Big Highlanders and nearly 19,000 Lexus TX SUVs this year through May.
As of this morning, the recall has not been listed on nhtsa.gov/recalls. For further information, contact Toyota customer support at 1-800-331-4331 or Lexus customer support at 1-800-255-3987, or visit the brands' recall website here.
