In the history of automobiles, there are only three models that have exceeded global sales of 30 million units, unequivocally making them the world's best-selling cars. These models are Volkswagen Golf, the Ford F-Series pickups, and the Toyota Corolla, each distinctly representing the character of Europe, America, and Japan's major automotive manufacturing regions. Among them, the undisputed champion in sales and the king of sedans is the Toyota Corolla, which first came onto the market in 1966.。

Over 53 years (up to 2019, with the twelfth generation launched in 2019), spanning eleven generations and selling in over 150 countries, the Corolla has achieved a cumulative global sales figure exceeding 47 million units. In 2018 alone, it sold 1.18 million units, capturing the title of the year's highest-selling single model globally. The success of the Corolla no longer requires any additional accolades.

The twelfth generation Corolla, with the support of the new TNGA architecture, has achieved a comprehensive revolution.

Exterior Design

The twelfth generation Corolla retains the characteristics of the TNGA architecture, presenting a low center of gravity and a sporty stance. The new family-style front fascia features a large, exaggerated grille, complemented by C-shaped trim on both sides, giving the vehicle a notably aggressive appearance. The integrated LED headlamps for both high and low beams (available only on high-end models) enhance the sharp angles of the front bumper.

The new vehicle's dimensions are 4630mm in length, 1780mm in width, and 1455mm in height, with a wheelbase of 2700mm, positioning it within the mainstream level in its class.

From the side, the new generation Corolla's front-low, rear-high diving posture is very pronounced, further emphasizing the car's sportiness.

Additionally, the lower design of the front end also expands the driver's field of view. By reducing the height of the hood by 35mm, narrowing the area of the A-pillar, and repositioning the exterior rearview mirrors to the doors, the size of the blind spots is significantly reduced. The tail end is equally sharp and layered, with tail lights on both sides connected by a continuous chrome-plated trim, creating a unified and refined visual effect.

Interior and Comfort

The interior has undergone significant changes as well. Unlike the flat design style of the previous generation, the new generation of the Toyota Corolla boasts a more three-dimensional interior design while retaining a minimalist style. The interior color scheme also effectively enhances the overall quality feel of the vehicle. The use of soft-touch materials complemented by metal elements and stitching adds a fine touch to both the visual and tactile experience of the interior.

The entertainment system features a 7-inch touchscreen in the base model and a 9-inch screen in the higher trims, both supporting Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

However, possibly due to design constraints, the legroom for the front passenger is somewhat compromised, which might not be very comfortable for passengers over 180 cm tall. Moreover, the headroom in the rear seats is slightly cramped.

Engine

In terms of power, the new generation of Karo offers three different powertrain options.

The entry-level model is equipped with a 1.5L three-cylinder naturally aspirated gasoline engine that produces 119 horsepower and 185 N·m of torque, paired with a CVT transmission.

For the fuel-powered version, there's an additional option featuring a 2.0L four-cylinder naturally aspirated gasoline engine, capable of delivering 168 horsepower and 200 N·m of torque, also matched with a CVT transmission.

The hybrid model incorporates a system combining a 1.8L Atkinson cycle naturally aspirated engine and an electric motor. This 1.8L Atkinson cycle engine has a 40% thermal efficiency and a high compression ratio of 13:1, delivering a maximum power of 72kW and maximum torque of 142N·m. The two permanent magnet synchronous electric motors have a maximum output of 53kW and a peak torque of 163N·m. The combined total maximum power output is capped at 90kW, paired with a new generation parallel E-CVT electronic continuously variable transmission.

The THS II hybrid power system has made quite an impression. Toyota's hybrid system adjusts the load on the engine via electric motors, maintaining optimal engine efficiency and thus saving fuel. During driving, although the engine engages frequently, the transitions are remarkably smooth, without any abrupt disruptions in power linkage, maintaining Toyota's signature comfortable and linear power delivery style.

Safety Features

The highlights of the Corolla extend beyond its comfortable ride and handling to include top-tier safety features. The twelfth generation Corolla is equipped with Toyota’s latest generation TSS II safety suite, which enables near Level 2 autonomous driving. This system includes:

  • Full-Speed Range Dynamic Radar Cruise Control (DRCC)

  • Lane Departure Alert (LDA)

  • Pre-Collision System (PCS)

  • Lane Tracing Assist (LTA)

  • Automatic High Beams (AHB)

Additionally, the latest TNGA GOA body utilizes an impressive ratio of over 42% in ultra-high-tensile steel (590Mpa and above), coupled with eight SRS airbags, ensuring exemplary passive safety throughout the vehicle.

Prices

  • 1.5L gasoline model: starting from SAR 78,660

  • 2.0L gasoline model: starting from SAR 82,915

  • 1.8L hybrid model: starting from SAR 88,090

Summary

Since the launch of the first Corolla, Toyota has sold over 47 million units globally. This vehicle is economically priced and well-regarded for its reliability, with a reasonable price range from 78,660 SAR to 109,940 SAR. It is also one of the most trusted brands in the Middle East.

If you're looking to combine a worry-free driving experience with top-notch comfort for less than 100,000 SAR, we believe there is no better car than the Toyota Corolla.
