The Mazda CX-5 was the best-selling model in North America last year, selling 153,808 units. This compact crossover has been around since 2017, and the new generation has now been officially confirmed for release. This announcement was quietly made in a document related to the company’s financial results for the fiscal year ending March 31, 2024.
The only other information shared by Mazda is that the third-generation model will use an internally developed hybrid engine. The Japanese company refrained from specifying whether it would be a traditional hybrid or a plug-in hybrid. Notably, the company has utilized Toyota's hybrid expertise in some of its models. In China, the CX-50 is equipped with electric motors from the Toyota RAV4. In the same document, Mazda states that the hybrid CX-50 is expected to launch in other markets in the second half of 2024.
When the CX-50 was launched in 2022, some wondered if the CX-5 would be discontinued. However, it turns out that the two models can coexist peacefully. This makes sense considering that the CX-5's popularity in North America was about three and a half times that of the CX-50 last year.
Furthermore, the company offers several SUV models, including the newly added CX-70 and CX-90, which feature larger six-cylinder engines. Mazda promises to release its first electric vehicle on a dedicated platform in 2027, followed by a massive rollout of electric vehicles from 2028 to 2030.
