The automotive world is abuzz as Ford announces the launch of its 2024 electric Explorer in Europe, a step delayed for over six months due to documentation issues regarding its batteries. The company was compelled to develop a new battery pack and redesign some mechanical components to comply with European regulations. Initially, production was slated for last year at the Cologne plant in Germany, coinciding with the end of Fiesta production. However, battery-related issues stalled the production lines for nearly nine months.
High-Efficiency Batteries for the 2024 Ford Explorer Electric
Ford has equipped the Explorer with new nickel-manganese-cobalt batteries that comply with European regulations, providing an impressive range of approximately 601 kilometers on a single charge. This marks a significant improvement over the previously prohibited battery's estimated range of 500 kilometers.
Engines and Performance Figures
The new electric Explorer shares its platform and engines with the Volkswagen ID.4. It will be available in a base variant featuring a rear electric motor producing 282 horsepower and a top-tier variant with dual motors and all-wheel drive generating a total of 335 horsepower. The starting price for the vehicle is set at 45,875 euros (approximately 185,000 SAR) for the single-motor variant. Ford has also announced plans for a more affordable version, expected to retail for around 40,000 euros (approximately 162,000 SAR) with 168 horsepower and a shorter range.
Exterior and Interior Design
The electric Explorer features a more muscular design compared to the ID.4, characterized by straight lines, a boxy structure, and a strong presence. It includes a shield-like design for the front grille and vertical taillights, with various wheel designs ranging from 19 to 21 inches.
Inside, the vehicle boasts a modern interior featuring a 15-inch touchscreen infotainment system and a 5-inch digital instrument cluster tailored for monitoring battery status, charging, and driver assistance systems. Notable features of the Ford Explorer Electric include keyless entry via smartphone, dual-zone climate control, wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, and ambient interior lighting available in ten different colors.
