Tesla has recently revealed a simple update for the Model Y in its largest market, China, which is considered the best-selling electric vehicle worldwide. This update includes enhancements in both interior and exterior design, as well as performance improvements, all while maintaining the same price in China.
One of the most notable updates is the improved acceleration rate, with the rear-wheel-drive version now accelerating from 0 to 100 km/h in just 5.9 seconds, a full second faster than its previous rating. The top speed remains at 217 km/h, while the acceleration and top speed rates for the dual-motor versions remain the same as previous models.
The vehicle's driving range has been slightly increased as well, with the base version now achieving 553 km on a single charge, an improvement of 8 km from before. Meanwhile, the long-range dual-motor all-wheel-drive version in China has seen an increase of 27 km, now rated at 689 km per charge. Despite these updates, the performance version's specifications remain untouched.
It is unclear what changes were made to the powertrain to enhance acceleration in the rear-wheel-drive versions and achieve longer range. However, reports from China also indicate updates to the self-driving computer and insulation. Additionally, Tesla has enhanced the vehicle's appearance by painting the wheels black, adding a touch of elegance to the exterior.
Inside, the update introduces ambient lighting as an LED strip that extends across the dashboard, similar to the lighting update in the enhanced Model 3. Notably, the wooden accents on the black dashboard of the Model Y have been replaced with a different material.
Despite these improvements, Tesla has kept the price of the base model in China unchanged at $36,785. A larger update for the vehicle is expected later, similar to the Model 3, and will be called Project Juniper.
