Kia announced over a year ago that it plans to launch two electric pickups by 2027. Recently, one of these models was spotted testing in California, sporting a camouflage design. This vehicle is not the recently unveiled Tasnaman, as it appears different and will feature an internal combustion engine at least initially. The images show that this vehicle is a prototype using parts from other models.
Despite being heavily disguised, it's noticeable that the truck has the same headlights and mirrors as the EV9. Additionally, it features taillights similar to the Hyundai Santa Cruz. The side mirror mounts are positioned slightly lower on the doors, while in the Tasnaman they are located at the base of the A-pillar. Another noticeable difference is the rounded wheel arches instead of the sharper design seen in the Tasnaman. Furthermore, this mysterious electric truck seems to have hidden door handles.
Both pickups feature a double cab structure with relatively small cargo beds. Like the recently spotted Tasnaman in the US, this electric truck bears Michigan plates. The orange side markings on the headlights indicate that it is a vehicle with American specifications. It appears to have a blue front bumper inspired by the EV9, while the rest of the truck is gray, except for white mirrors and red hooks.
Since this is a prototype, it is unlikely to be released to the market until 2026. It is unclear whether this truck is the EV9 or a separate model. The Tasnaman will be launched next year with a turbocharged engine and will rely on a body-on-frame platform.
When Kia announced two electric pickups in March 2022, it stated that one would be a “custom” model and the other a “strategic” vehicle for emerging markets. The Tasnaman is likely the latter, as an electric vehicle version is expected to follow later in this decade. Regardless, Kia is certainly planning to launch at least one pickup in North America in the coming years.
