Porsche will continue to sell Panameras equipped with gas and plug-in hybrid powertrains after the electric Panamera launches later this decade.

Porsche's R&D head, Michael Steiner, stated in an interview with Autocar that the company will update its gas and plug-in hybrid powertrains to ensure they comply with emissions regulations.

In July, Porsche announced a similar plan for the Cayenne. The automaker will introduce an electric Cayenne around 2026, while still selling gas and plug-in hybrid versions alongside it into the next decade.

“The new Cayenne will be fully electric, but we will have the ICE version available throughout its lifespan,” Steiner told Autocar. “The same goes for the Panamera.”

This strategic shift marks a departure from Porsche's earlier plan to be mainly electric by 2030. This change, announced in July, is due to the slower than anticipated adoption rates for EVs.

The Panamera was last redesigned for the 2024 model year, and for 2025, it will offer two gas options and four plug-in hybrids.

The electric Panamera will utilize a dedicated EV platform, likely the SSP Sport platform that Porsche is developing for its three-row SUV expected around 2027. The electric Panamera should arrive after that date.

Steiner did not disclose any details regarding the electric Panamera. It's possible that the car will increase in size to create a buffer with the Taycan, which Porsche intends to keep in its lineup. The Taycan is only a few inches shorter than the current Panamera. By making future Panameras larger, Porsche aims to target full-size sedan buyers.
