The CVT (Continuously Variable Transmission) in the Nissan Sylphy is recommended to have its dedicated oil changed every 200,000 kilometers (based on computer diagnostics).
The primary role of transmission oil is to keep the gear system clean, provide lubrication, and prolong the lifespan of the transmission. The reliability and lifespan of the CVT largely depend on the materials used in the metal belt drive components.
According to technical data from Dutch company VDT, new designs and technologies have addressed past issues with CVTs. A global test of 800,000 CVTs showed that only 200 experienced failures, resulting in a failure rate of 0.25%. This indicates high quality and reliability of the system. The CVT employs high-strength, high-quality materials and precision manufacturing techniques, enabling it to achieve the same lifespan as the engine, with a lifetime of maintenance-free operation.
Although theoretically the CVT does not require oil changes, in harsh conditions or prolonged use, data communication with the transmission control unit via a diagnostic tool is necessary to check if the internal records exceed 210,000 kilometers. If so, an oil change is recommended using dedicated original transmission oil.
