Chinese automaker Nio has launched the first electric model under its new brand, Firefly, directly targeting the premium small car segment with rivals like the BMW Mini and Mercedes Benz Smart. Priced from 119,800 yuan (60,174 AED), the new model stands out as one of the most attractive electric vehicles in its category in terms of value and features. This move comes as part of Nio's broader effort to strengthen its market position following a period of fluctuating performance, betting on smart design, modern equipment, and strategic pricing to boost sales and regain growth momentum.
Modern Design and Futuristic Cabin Technology
The Firefly offers an ideal urban driving experience, thanks to its compact dimensions: 4,003 mm in length, 1,781 mm in width, and 1,557 mm in height, with a wheelbase of 2,615 mm. These proportions make it well suited for maneuvering through dense city streets. The car sports clean, aerodynamic lines and a refined front fascia, while the interior features an AI-powered voice assistant called Lumo, designed to enhance driver interaction and elevate the in cabin tech experience.
Standing out among its rivals, Firefly includes a front trunk (frunk) with a 92 liter capacity, the largest in its segment, adding practical everyday utility. It also features the latest car technologies, including interactive entertainment systems and smart driving assistance.
Efficient Performance and Disruptive Pricing
The Firefly is designed with energy efficiency in mind, consuming just 10.9 kWh per 100 kilometers. It is powered by a 42.1 kWh LFP battery that provides a range of up to 420 kilometers on the CLTC test cycle. Notably, this marks the first time Nio has sourced batteries from Sunwoda, signaling a diversification in its supply chain.
Performance wise, the Firefly is equipped with a rear electric motor that delivers 105 kW of power and 200 Nm of torque. While acceleration figures have not been emphasized, Nio has instead highlighted the vehicle’s energy efficiency and technological innovations as its key selling points.
Initially priced at 119,800 CNY (60,187 AED), Firefly is approximately 29,000 CNY (14,569 AED) less than the pre sale price announced during Nio Day 2024. Its pricing undercuts both the all electric Mini Cooper and the Smart #1 in China, clearly showcasing Nio's aggressive entry into the compact EV segment.
Global Vision and Scalable Strategy
Nio's vision for Firefly extends well beyond China. During development, the model was tested across more than 40 cities in 17 countries, with a focus on Europe. Although the initial rollout was planned for Europe, high tariffs prompted a strategic pivot to first launch domestically.
Beginning August 1, Nio will offer Firefly through its BaaS (Battery as a Service) program, allowing customers to purchase the vehicle without the battery and instead lease it monthly, lowering the barrier to ownership for many buyers. Unlike Nio’s Onvo sub brand, which uses a separate sales network, Firefly will share distribution channels with the main Nio brand.
The model is already available in over 300 Nio showrooms across China, and test drives have begun. Firefly will also be featured alongside other Nio vehicles at Auto Shanghai 2025, highlighting its role in the brand's growth strategy. Moreover, Firefly is expected to support Nio’s fifth generation battery swap stations starting early next year, further enhancing its tech forward appeal.
All these elements position Firefly as a key pillar in Nio’s ambition to double its annual sales, targeting around 440,000 vehicle deliveries by the end of 2025.
