Hyundai officially launched a limited edition of the Kona Electric in Japan, designed to embody a more robust and adventurous spirit with selected accessories.

This special model is named Hyundai Kona Mauna Loa, and only 30 units will be produced, making it the most distinctive Korean SUV model to date.

The Japanese special model is named after the largest active volcano in the world, located in Hawaii. Its standout feature is the ‘Wild & Tough Black’ coating applied to the bumpers, fenders, and side skirts, enhancing its durability and scratch resistance.

The resulting appearance evokes memories of the unpainted plastic bumpers from the 1990s. The vehicle is equipped with new black alloy wheels fitted with Toyo Open Country A/T tires.

Hyundai also added mud flaps and black accents, along with exclusive logos. Other off-road equipment includes a specially designed crossbar for the roof, suitable for carrying camping gear, with the only color option being Mirage Green. Inside, the interior features light gray leather upholstery with yellow accents.

The rubber floor mats make it easy to clean the interior after long trips in nature. Additional accessories include a foldable chair and a storage solution for the rear seats, as well as boxes for organizing items in the trunk.

It’s important to note that the Hyundai Kona Mauna Loa does not feature any performance or structural modifications compared to the Kona Electric. This means the single electric motor producing 201 horsepower still powers the front wheels, drawing energy from the larger 64.8 kWh battery.

Hyundai will only produce 30 units of the Kona Mauna Loa, making it an exclusive and distinctive special edition of a mainstream SUV.

Prices start at 4,950,000 yen, or about $32,565, which is 55,000 yen ($362) more expensive than the high-spec Kona Long and $724 less than the sporty Kona N Line.
