MG is actively planning to launch a new mid-size truck in Australia, leveraging the technology and expertise from its parent company SAIC. This new vehicle aims to compete with the Ford Ranger and is expected to be launched within this decade, helping MG achieve its ambitious sales targets in the region.

MG aspires to be among the top five selling brands in Australia by the end of 2027 and to break into the top three by the end of 2030. MG Australia's CEO Peter Chow acknowledged that they “will never have a chance to be in the top three” without a small truck, as this is the dominant segment in Australia. MG already has a mid-size pickup in its lineup called the LDV/Maxus T60/T70. The MG Extender was introduced in 2019 and is currently available in markets such as Thailand, Laos, and Pakistan. While there were plans to introduce this model to Australia, the company previously ruled out the idea, stating they were waiting for “the right product” for the market, which means that the Maxus T60 and LDV models did not meet their standards.

This means MG will likely use another product from SAIC as the basis for its new truck. It is said that the MG-branded truck will adopt its unique features and will not be a mere copy of another model. In terms of engine options, reports suggest that the MG truck may be offered with combustion, hybrid, or fully electric options, with the Australian CEO acknowledging the ability to access all technical solutions from the parent company.

The upcoming MG truck will compete against models such as the Ford Ranger and Toyota Hilux, while also facing challenges from Mitsubishi Triton, Isuzu D-Max, Mazda BT-50, Volkswagen Amarok, Kia Tasman, and GWM Cannon Ute.
