Mercedes-Benz is recalling 27,190 S-Class sedans, including high-end Maybach versions, due to the possibility of engine stalling or fire hazards.

The recall affects the 2021-2023 Mercedes-Benz S 580 and Mercedes-Maybach S 580 sedans, which are equipped with a twin-turbocharged 4.0-liter V-8 engine featuring cylinder deactivation and Camtronic variable valve lift. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), these vehicles contain faulty engine control unit software that could potentially cause the engine to stall or overheat under certain conditions.

In the event of a failure of the Camtronic system (an unrelated issue not covered by this recall), NHTSA states that the amount of fuel injected into cylinders may be incorrectly increased during cylinder deactivation. This can lead to engine stalling and elevated exhaust temperatures, potentially damaging components such as wiring harnesses or catalytic converters, and may even result in a fire.

Mercedes informed NHTSA that it is aware of one potential fire-related claim, but stated that it has no knowledge of any injuries, deaths, or crashes associated with this issue. Drivers will not receive any warning before this problem occurs, although they may observe a check engine light after a failure.

The remedy involves an update to the engine contro

l unit software, which dealers will perform free of charge. Mercedes plans to send owner notification letters on November 26. Owners can also contact Mercedes customer service at 1-877-496-3691 for more information.

After failing to revive Maybach as a standalone brand in the early 2000s, Mercedes established it as a sub-brand offering ultra-luxury versions of its main brand vehicles. The Maybach S 580 was introduced alongside the current-generation S-Class for the 2021 model year as the second Maybach model under this new strategy, following the Maybach GLS-Class SUV. Mercedes subsequently launched a Maybach S 680 variant powered by a V-12 engine, and has since introduced Maybach versions of the electric EQS SUV and SL roadster.
