Mercedes-AMG is entering a new era of high-performance electrification with an all-new dedicated EV platform. While AMG has dabbled in electric vehicles before, most notably with the SLS AMG Electric Drive over a decade ago, the brand is now preparing to introduce two fully electric models this year: an SUV and a sports sedan. The latter is expected to replace the AMG GT 4-Door Coupe while incorporating elements from the Vision AMG Concept.

Although full specifications remain undisclosed, AMG has dropped key hints about its upcoming electric performance sedan, which is set to challenge some of the most powerful EVs on the market.

Design and Identity

The upcoming AMG sedan draws heavy inspiration from the Vision AMG Concept, featuring an elongated body similar to the AMG GT 4-Door Coupe but with notable refinements. Based on teaser images, the production model is expected to retain its low-slung nose, pronounced fenders, and a bold reinterpretation of the Panamericana grille. Aerodynamic enhancements such as canards on the front bumper and an active rear spoiler further hint at its high-performance capabilities.

While the Vision AMG Concept had a distinctive pointed rear-end, the production model appears to adopt a more practical liftback design, increasing usability without sacrificing sleekness. Some details, like the fake, Miata-style taillights seen in teaser images, are likely just placeholders, with the final design expected to showcase AMG’s signature aggressive styling.

What will Mercedes-AMG name it?

The exact name of AMG’s new electric sedan remains unknown, but it will not carry the EQ branding. Mercedes-Benz is phasing out the EQ prefix, instead opting for a more integrated approach where EVs are distinguished by “EQ Technology” rather than a separate naming convention. This shift was first seen in models like the G580 with EQ Technology, suggesting AMG could introduce a new, unique nameplate for its latest high-performance EV.

Performance and Technology

The AMG electric sedan will be built on AMG.EA, a dedicated 800-volt performance platform that won’t be shared with standard Mercedes-Benz models. This allows AMG to optimize the battery pack, energy density, and weight distribution for a more focused, high-performance driving experience. The battery will be slimmer than current Mercedes EVs, providing more interior space while improving efficiency.

For power, AMG will utilize Yasa-developed axial-flux electric motors, which deliver higher power density and efficiency compared to traditional radial-flux motors. Each motor weighs only 24 kg but generates 480 horsepower and 800 Nm of torque. AMG is expected to equip the sedan with at least two motors, meaning a total output of over 1,000 horsepower is likely. A tri-motor setup with nearly 1,500 horsepower could also be in development, offering mind-blowing acceleration and standard all-wheel drive.

When will it launch, and how much will it cost?

Mercedes-AMG has yet to announce an official debut date, but given that teaser images have already surfaced, a reveal could happen in early 2024, with sales starting by early 2026.

Pricing is expected to be north of $150,000, surpassing the AMG GT 4-Door Coupe and the AMG EQS, which starts at $148,700. Given the cutting-edge battery, advanced motor technology, and exclusive platform, the new sedan could easily become one of the most expensive and powerful electric AMGs yet.

Competition and AMG’s Future

The AMG electric sports sedan will enter a fiercely competitive segment, going head-to-head with the Porsche Taycan, Lucid Air, Tesla Model S, and even the Xiaomi SU7 Ultra, which boasts 1,500 horsepower. Given AMG’s commitment to performance, handling, and cutting-edge technology, the new sedan will likely aim to deliver a more driver-focused experience than some of its rivals.

Despite its push towards high-performance electrification, AMG has reassured fans that V8 models aren’t going anywhere, at least for now. The brand believes its customers will embrace electrified AMG performance, with CEO Michael Schiebe stating that AMG enthusiasts value cutting-edge technology as much as raw power.

With the arrival of this highly anticipated electric sedan, AMG is making it clear that the future of performance driving will be fast, innovative, and electrified.
