Mercedes-AMG has recently officially announced the launch of its first independent SUV model, which will become the second electric vehicle produced based on a proprietary EV platform.

The introduction of this model aims to follow in the footsteps of the BMW XM, which is seen as an independent SUV for the German company's special division. AMG states that they are fully committed to developing a fully electric SUV, codenamed 'Born in Affalterbach'.

Currently, AMG has only showcased a shadow silhouette of the model, revealing limited information about this large sports vehicle, particularly its coupe-like rear design. This new SUV will be introduced as AMG's second electric vehicle, following the GT electric four-door sedan, which will compete with the Porsche Taycan.

The new vehicle will be produced using AMG's proprietary electric vehicle platform 'AMG.EA', with competitors including the upcoming Lotus Eletre and Porsche Cayenne electric version. AMG has had over 25 years of development history in the SUV market, with its first model being the 1998 Mercedes ML55 AMG.

Currently, AMG has launched seven SUV models, ranging from the compact GLA to the popular G63 4×4. Michael Schieb, Chairman of the Board of Mercedes-AMG, previously pointed out that AMG's electric vehicles should not 'run out of power quickly', referring to other electric vehicles that cannot maintain excellent performance.

He also added that electric vehicles should have the ability to charge as quickly as possible to resume driving. To achieve these goals, AMG will utilize electric motors from Yasa, which are designed to enhance torque by 30% and efficiency by 5%, while doubling the performance of traditional permanent magnet synchronous motors.

Although this SUV is the first sports utility vehicle developed by AMG, its performance division has already created five custom models, including both generations of the Mercedes-AMG GT, as well as the SLS model. Michael Schieb further stated, 'SUVs have been among our most popular models for many years.

With the 'Born in Affalterbach', we respond to this market trend by offering a truly high-performance and appealing SUV to our customers based on the AMG.EA platform.' He added, 'Our new high-performance platform follows a clear philosophy: 'AMG first, EV second.'

This means that these vehicles are not just electric vehicles, but also embody AMG's core qualities in terms of passion and performance. The first versions of the new AMG SUV are expected to enter winter testing soon, but production models are unlikely to be launched before 2026.
