Lancia has officially unveiled the new electric hatchback Ypsilon, after a long wait. With its elegant design, efficient electric drivetrain, and compact dimensions, Ypsilon represents the beginning of Lancia's comeback. By sharing its platform with several other Stellantis vehicles, the car boasts many competitive features and specifications.
The fully electric Ypsilon comes with a 154-horsepower electric motor, matching the output of the new electric crossover Fiat 600e. The 51 kWh battery provides a range of up to 402 km on a single charge, based on WLTP European testing estimates. The battery can be charged from 20% to 80% in just 24 minutes, and it can offer a range of 100 km after only 10 minutes of charging.
Lancia has not disclosed acceleration or top speed figures, but the car is heavier than expected for its small size. In terms of aesthetics, Ypsilon surpasses the Opel Corsa-e in design, being an elegant hatchback with sophisticated and advanced details. This is the first Lancia vehicle to adopt the Pu+Ra design cues, first previewed in the HPE concept model. The car features touches from Delta and Stratos models, evident in the round LED taillights.
The front of the car is glossy black, echoing the Monte Carlo models. Unfortunately, the company has abandoned the iconic shield logo, opting for a new font inspired by Italian fashion brands.
Inside, the new Ypsilon benefits from the latest technologies and luxurious touches. The cabin centers around the new SALA interface. SALA stands for Sound Air Light Augmentation, as it controls the infotainment, air conditioning, and lighting systems. Standard features include Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and Bluetooth connectivity, with most functions operated via a 10.25-inch digital touchscreen.
It also offers electrically adjustable seats with heating and massage functions. Lancia claims that Ypsilon is the only car in its class to provide level two autonomous driving technology, which can be activated at speeds between 30 and 150 km/h. This package includes adaptive cruise control, lane centering assistance, and traffic jam assistance.
There will be a launch edition, Edizione Limitata Cassina. This unique limited edition, with only 1906 units produced, will combine Ypsilon's style with design, colors, and materials associated with the Italian luxury furniture brand Cassina.
Inside, the limited edition features seats adorned with recycled materials. The blue velvet seat surfaces are double-stitched with 100% recycled threads, while the seat frame is made from recycled PVC. The same elegant blue has been used on the dashboard and door panels, giving the interior a luxurious feel.
For the first time in several years, Lancia will return to Europe, having only sold its cars in Italy in recent years. In the first half of 2024, Lancia will launch 70 new dealerships in key markets, including Belgium, the Netherlands, France, and Spain. The Italian brand will make its entry into the German market in 2025.
