Jaguar will unveil a concept model that embodies a luxurious four-door electric sedan, aiming to shift the brand from a failed competitor against BMW to a profitable rival of Porsche and Bentley. This transformation is possible due to Jaguar's bold decision to abandon the nearly production-ready electric XJ and start anew. This choice has proven to be the right one.
Spy shots of the XJ EV prototypes were captured before the project was canceled in early 2021 by then-CEO Thierry Bolloré. However, a leaked image seemingly taken inside a Jaguar Land Rover workshop gives us our first uncamouflaged look at what could have been.
This image shows a white XJ sedan that appears to be a composite built from various parts of other Jaguars and competing vehicles. Most notably, the headlights wrap around the front corners of the car, yet overall it simply resembles an updated XF and lacks the wow factor expected of a large Jaguar.
Initial indicators suggest that the concept model set to debut on December 2 will indeed possess that wow factor. Three images of a camouflaged prototype released by Jaguar last week show a long, low sedan with a sloping windshield and reportedly no rear window at all.
Jaguar's decision to scrap the electric XJ wasn't merely due to a loss of confidence in the car, which was apparently just a year away from being sold. The automaker had lost confidence in its entire direction, having spent over 20 years attempting and failing to compete directly with the likes of BMW and Mercedes. The elimination of the XJ, and more recently, its entire lineup, allowed Jaguar to begin afresh.
Instead of targeting BMW, Jaguar aims to elevate itself and position as a competitor to Porsche and even Bentley. The new generation of its vehicles, starting with the sedan launching next year followed by two more electric vehicles before the end of the decade, will be more expensive and luxurious.
