Driving in the desert is one of the most beautiful adventures you can have if you make the necessary preparations to ensure your safety and enjoy the trip without any problems that might spoil your fun. Here are some helpful tips for you to drive confidently and safely in the desert, whether you're preparing for a safari or a dune bashing adventure.
Choosing the Right Vehicle
I know that you’re aware of the type of vehicle you need to drive, but just in case, don't consider taking a vehicle to the dunes if it’s not 4-wheel or all-wheel-drive. 4x4 vehicles are best for desert driving. They distribute torque correctly to the tires and handle soft sand and rough terrain perfectly. However, that's not enough. Some cars have this system, but it hasn't proven effective for this type of extreme driving. If you're not confident enough that your vehicle can handle this type of driving, don't risk it unless you're with a group that can be by your side in times of need.
Driving with a Group
It's always best to drive in the desert with a group of friends, and even better with a group of professionals. In the event of any problem, or if your car gets stuck, as mentioned, others can help you instead of leaving you stuck in a scorching desert waiting for help.
Lowering Tire Pressure
Lowering your tire pressure helps improve the contact surface between the sand and your tires, ensuring grip and preventing them from sinking into the sand. It is usually recommended to lower your tire pressure to between 12 and 15 PSI, but I personally advise you to check the tire pressure convenient to your car. Don't forget to readjust your tire pressure when you return to normal driving.
Driving Safely
Be careful when driving, as recklessness can cause you to get stuck in the sand and ruin your trip. I know you’re there for the adventure, but I want to also be careful if you’re not sure of the surface you’re driving on. Therefore, drive at an appropriate speed that maintains the flow of traffic, without sudden stops. Avoid applying too much pressure on the accelerator, which can cause the tires to spin violently and uselessly, thus creating holes that will cause them to sink in the sand. Remember to drive at smooth angles when climbing or descending sand dunes, and of course, avoid sharp turns that could cause you to roll over.
Prepare Essential Equipment
Be sure to pack some emergency equipment for your trip, including a tow rope to help you get your car out of the sand if it gets stuck. Make sure you have a desert jack to lift the car. Speaking of tire pressure, make sure you have an air pump to check the tire pressure. This is in addition to tow bars to help you get your car out if it gets stuck in the sand.
Plan Your Trip Ahead
Bring enough water and food, especially if you plan to spend a long time in the desert. Make sure to inform a loved one of your location and itinerary in case of an emergency. To avoid getting lost, use desert maps and GPS apps.
Be Aware of the Weather and Time
Don't forget to monitor the weather forecast to avoid driving on a day when the heat is too high, which can put your life at risk. This will also help you avoid sandstorms, which can affect visibility and make driving difficult, potentially causing you to get lost in the desert.
Don't drive recklessly, and take all necessary precautions to ensure your safety. Driving in the desert is a very enjoyable adventure, and we don't want it to become a bad memory or a risk. Hence, be prepared for everything you might encounter during this wonderful journey. Also, be sure to protect the environment and not leave any waste behind, out of respect for the desert's natural environment.
