Chrysler has issued a recall affecting 24,111 Pacifica Hybrid models due to potential fire risks associated with the hybrid system battery. Until the issue is resolved, the company advises owners to refrain from charging their vehicles and to park them outdoors.
This recall impacts certain 2017 to 2021 model year Chrysler Pacifica Hybrids, including facelift versions. Of the 24,111 affected models, there are 19,516 in the United States, 2,912 in Canada, and the remaining 1,683 spread across other parts of the world.
According to the announcement, Stellantis discovered seven fire incidents related to the Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid after reviewing warranty data. All incidents occurred while the vehicles were parked, with some occurring during charging. Four customers reported symptoms of smoke inhalation due to fires in their minivans.
While the investigation is ongoing, the company's engineers have determined that the fires are caused by a rare defect in individual cells of the high-voltage battery. The risk of fire is reduced when the battery is depleted, which is why affected vehicle owners are advised not to charge them. The automaker also indicates that owners should park their vehicles away from structures or other vehicles until repairs can be made. Nevertheless, it is still classified as safe to drive. The solution to the problem involves a software update capable of detecting the issue and faults within the battery. In such cases, owners will receive a free replacement battery at the dealership. Interestingly, Stellantis noted that some affected areas in the Pacific region may have already been addressed with a similar software update.
Starting July 24, owners will be able to check if their 2017-2021 Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid is included in the recall by entering their VIN on the websites Recalls.mopar.com and checktoprotect.org. The company will contact affected parties via mail and asks those with further questions to call customer service.
