On April 9, BYD will officially launch the Han L sedan and Tang L SUV, both equipped with fast charging capabilities that require no more than 5 minutes. How does Tesla stand with BYD's advancements today? This marks a significant milestone for the esteemed Chinese company.
The Han L and Tang L models support a 10C charging rate, allowing rapid charging akin to refueling a gasoline vehicle. This feature addresses the needs of electric vehicle users who value every second of their time.
The pre-sale price for the Han L electric car in China starts at 270,000 CNY (approximately $37,080 USD), while the Tang L electric car is priced at 280,000 CNY (around $38,192 USD).
BYD will officially unveil these models on Wednesday following the commencement of pre-sales for their ultra-fast charging variants last month.
BYD stated: "The Han L will fulfill every young person's dream in a single vehicle." The Chinese NEV manufacturer also announced in promotional material that both the Han L and Tang L models are set to become iconic leaders in automotive history.
Pre-sales for both models began on March 17 in China. These are the first vehicles built on BYD's Super e-Platform, which utilizes fast-charging batteries supporting a 10C charge multiplier.
The battery can handle up to 1000 volts of charging voltage and currents up to 1000 amps, enabling a charging power of up to 1000 kilowatts, reportedly the highest globally according to BYD.
According to BYD, this marks the first time in this sector that megawatts have been used as a unit of measurement for EV charging power.
With this charging power, it is possible to add two kilometers of range per second or achieve an additional 400 kilometers in just five minutes.
The Super e-Platform also features a new high-speed motor capable of reaching 30,511 RPM—the highest among mass-produced automotive motors worldwide as per BYD.
Both models exhibit strong performance: the Han L accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) in just 2.7 seconds, while the Tang L achieves this in 3.6 seconds.
The dimensions for the Han L are 5050 mm in length, 1960 mm in width, and 1505 mm in height with a wheelbase of 2,970 mm. The Tang L measures at 5,040 mm long, 1,996 mm wide, and 1,760 mm high with a wheelbase of 2,950 mm.
Both vehicles come equipped with BYD's God's Eye B intelligent driving system which includes roof-mounted LiDAR for enhanced driving assistance and autonomy.
These vehicles represent a revolution in the electric car market. Charging time has often been a deterrent for many potential buyers due to its impact on range anxiety; not everyone can afford to leave their car plugged in for over 20 minutes. BYD continually surprises us with new launches and innovations—enhancing autonomous driving one day and releasing cars capable of underwater travel or drones another. The company is ever evolving while Tesla grapples with issues surrounding Elon Musk's political distractions.
