On April 8, I reported on BYD's unveiling of the fast-charging Tang L and Han L models. Just a day later, on April 9, BYD launched these vehicles with their fast-charging technology, which I'll detail below.
BYD, the NEV manufacturer, has introduced these models at prices lower than the pre-sale prices announced last month.
During the announcement, BYD revealed that the Han L would be available in both a fully electric version (Han L EV) and a hybrid version (Han L DM). Similarly, the Tang SUV will also be available in hybrid and electric versions under the same naming as the Han variants.
BYD HAN L
The Han L electric sedan is a mid-to-large-sized vehicle with dimensions of 5050 mm in length, 1960 mm in width, and 1505 mm in height, along with a wheelbase of 2970 mm.
All three variants are equipped with Blade batteries, offering an 83.2 kWh capacity and an electric range of either 701 km or 601 km depending on the model and CLTC conditions.
Built on BYD's high-voltage electric platform at 1000 volts, the model supports simultaneous charging with dual charging guns up to a maximum charge rate of 10C.
According to BYD, the Han L EV can cover 400 kilometers with just five minutes of charging and can charge from 10% to 70% in six minutes. A full charge from zero to 100% takes only 20 minutes.
The hybrid sedan relies on BYD's fifth-generation DM-p hybrid technology and is equipped with a 1.5T engine.
The Han L DM hybrid comes standard with a battery capacity of 29.4 kWh, offering an all-electric range between 180 km and 200 km. Its total range can reach up to 1200 km when fully charged.
Tang L SUV Specifications
For the BYD Tang L EV, it measures 5040 mm long, 1996 mm wide, and stands at 1760 mm tall with a wheelbase of 2950 mm. It also utilizes BYD's high-voltage platform at 1000 volts and comes standard with a battery capacity of 100.5 kWh. It features a maximum charge rate of up to 8.4C.
This platform allows it to charge approximately 370 kilometers of electric range in five minutes. It charges from 10% to 70% in six minutes and from zero to full in just under half an hour at approximately 29.7 minutes.
It uses the same drivetrain as the Han L DM but features a larger battery capacity at 35.6 kWh.
The Tang L DM hybrid offers three electric range options: 215 km, 200 km, and 175 km. The total range reaches up to 1270 km with a full tank and charge.
Pricing Strategy
BYD offers three trims for the Han L EV starting at CNY219,800 (~USD29,910), CNY239,800 (~USD32,630), and CNY279,800 (~USD38,080), significantly lower than previous pre-order prices ranging from CNY270,000 to CNY350,000 (approx. USD36,750-47,650).
The Han L DM hybrid matches the size of its electric counterpart and is available in two single-motor versions and one dual-motor version priced from CNY209,800 (~USD28,950), CNY229,800 (~USD31,750), to CNY259,800 (~USD35,850).
For the all-electric Tang L SUV, three trims start from CNY239,800 (~USD33,100), CNY259,800 (~USD35,850), to CNY289,800 (~USD39,950). These prices are also lower than pre-order estimates ranging from CNY280,000 to CNY360,000 (approx. USD38,650-49,650).
The Tang L DM hybrid also comes in three versions starting at CNY229,800 (~USD31,750), CNY249,800 (~USD34,500), and CNY285,800 (~USD39,400).
This move reflects BYD's competitive pricing strategy aimed at attracting a broader customer base within the mid-to-high segment EV market.
Prices mentioned are for the Chinese market; the cars haven’t arrived yet and we expect them to arrive soon in the GCC market.
