On April 7, Chinese automaker BAIC launched the extended-range version of the BAIC BJ40 SUV, priced around $30,500 in China. The BJ40 is a four-wheel-drive SUV that combines robust off-road styling with modern technological comforts for daily driving. Designed for adventure enthusiasts, it offers competitive pricing compared to other expensive off-road vehicles.
What Are Extended Range Versions or REVs?
Extended range vehicles, known as REVs, are hybrid cars that primarily run on electricity. Their internal combustion engine acts as a generator to charge the batteries and compensate for energy loss during demanding conditions such as strong acceleration or uphill driving. This design alleviates electric range anxiety by allowing the vehicle to travel longer distances without frequent recharging.
BAIC BJ40 REV: Details
The new model is built on the Magic Core electric drive platform and features a hybrid system boasting a range exceeding 1,200 kilometers. It retains the conventional design of its predecessor while introducing a modern front fascia.
Equipped with an electric four-wheel drive system, it includes mechanical differential locks on both front and rear axles, plus a central electronic lock—totaling three locks. The rear axle has been replaced with independent suspension thanks to the electric motor.
The vehicle features a 1.5-liter turbo engine with an extended range hybrid system and a nickel-cobalt-manganese ternary lithium battery offering an all-electric range of 155 km (96 miles). Fuel consumption is rated at 1.39 liters per 100 km (169 mpg), with a total range over 1,200 km (746 miles).
With dimensions of 4,890 mm in length, 1,940 mm in width, and 1,964 mm in height, it also features a wheelbase of 2,760 mm. The approach angle is 38 degrees, departure angle is 37 degrees, ground clearance is 215 mm (8.5 inches), and wading depth is 750 mm (29.5 inches).
Inside the extended range version of the BAIC BJ40, you'll find new interior color options. It comes with a 10.25-inch digital LCD dashboard and a dual central control screen measuring 12.8 inches each; one screen allows the front passenger to manage entertainment systems. It also features an engine start/stop button.
While availability in Gulf markets hasn't been confirmed yet, the growing popularity of extended-range vehicles suggests we might see them soon in regions like the Middle East where desert driving enthusiasts will appreciate its extensive range.
