Audi has unveiled the all new A5 e-hybrid, a sleek fastback sedan that marks a significant evolution from the aging A4. Designed with European markets in mind, this plug-in hybrid model combines dynamic styling with impressive efficiency, although its arrival in the U.S. remains uncertain. The A5 e-hybrid blends powerful performance, all electric driving capability, and premium design elements, positioning it as a serious contender in the modern hybrid segment.

Twin Powertrain Delivers Striking Performance

At the heart of the A5 e-hybrid lies a turbocharged 2.0 liter four cylinder engine generating 248 horsepower, paired with a permanent magnet synchronous electric motor rated at up to 140 horsepower. The setup is integrated into a seven speed dual clutch transmission. Audi offers two versions: a 295 hp variant and a higher output model delivering 362 hp and 500 Nm of torque. The latter accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in just 5.1 seconds, while the standard version completes the sprint in 5.9 seconds. Both variants are electronically limited to a top speed of 250 km/h.

Supporting the hybrid system is a new high voltage battery with a net capacity of 20.7 kWh, providing up to 110 kilometers of electric range under WLTP standards. EPA estimates are expected to place the range closer to 91 kilometers. Compared to the previous generation battery in the A6 PHEV, this unit offers 45% more capacity without occupying additional space, thanks to a more compact structure that bonds the cells directly into the battery casing.

Fast Charging and Intelligent Regeneration Enhance Everyday Use

The A5 e-hybrid supports AC charging of up to 11 kW, reducing full charging time to just 2.5 hours, a significant improvement over previous 7.4 kW systems. Regenerative braking has also been enhanced and can be manually controlled via paddles behind the steering wheel or automatically adjusted using route data and predictive driver-assistance systems.

Drivers can switch between full EV and hybrid modes, with the hybrid setting allowing a customizable battery reserve. When in EV mode, the A5 e-hybrid caps its top speed at 140 km/h. Audi introduces the new "e-hybrid" badge to distinguish plug in hybrids from its fully electric "e-tron" lineup. A wagon variant will also be available in Europe, though it is unlikely to make it to the U.S. market.

German pricing starts at approximately $67,000 (246,093 AED), rising to $76,000 (279,150 AED) for the higher performance version. Deliveries are scheduled to begin in April. As for North America, the A5 e-hybrid likely won’t arrive until 2026, given that the standard A5 model isn’t expected before mid 2025.
