The FJ Cruiser is a name that resonates with off-road enthusiasts. Originally launched in 2007 with a 4.0-liter V6 engine, it quickly gained popularity for its retro-inspired design, unique door configuration, and advanced A-Trac traction control system. It became a top choice for those seeking adventure in jungles, deserts, and extreme terrains.

Toyota discontinued the FJ Cruiser (model code XJ10) in North America in 2014, marking the end of an era for many fans who viewed it as a more rugged and traditional off-roader than the Land Cruiser (J100) and the third-generation Land Cruiser Prado (J120). It has now been 10 years since the model left the U.S. market.

The FJ Cruiser remained in production in the Middle East until December 2022, concluding a 16-year run that began in 2006. However, recent reports suggest that Toyota is preparing to bring back the iconic model in 2025.

The new FJ Cruiser is expected to be priced between 3.5 million and 4.5 million yen (SAR 86,000 to 112,000) in overseas markets. Toyota has also registered trademarks for 'Land Cruiser FUN' and 'Land Cruiser FJ,' and in November last year, China registered the 'Land Cruiser FJ' trademark, indicating a possible successor.

The new model is anticipated to serve as the entry-level version of the short-wheelbase Land Cruiser 250 and may be built on either Toyota's latest IMV 0 platform or a shortened version of the TNGA-F platform.

Performance & Powertrain

The new FJ Cruiser will not feature the all-electric powertrain from the Compact Cruiser EV concept introduced in 2021, as that was merely a design study. Reports of the FJ Cruiser’s revival in 2022 ruled out an electric version.

A 2023 report suggests the new FJ Cruiser will offer both gasoline and hybrid powertrains. It is likely to adopt the i-FORCE MAX 2.4L turbocharged inline-four hybrid powertrain from the latest Land Cruiser J300 and Tacoma, which delivers 330 bhp at 6,000 rpm. This setup is expected to ensure strong performance and reliability.

There is still no official confirmation on the platform. Some sources claim the FJ Cruiser will use the IMV 0 platform, similar to the Hilux Champ, while others suggest it will adopt the TNGA-F platform. Regardless, if it shares the powertrain with the new Land Cruiser models, performance should not be a concern. The FJ Cruiser is also expected to feature a state-of-the-art four-wheel-drive system, electronically controlled differential locks, and the latest Toyota Safety Sense technology.

Design & Features

At the Land Cruiser 250 (new Prado) launch event, silhouettes of two vehicles appeared in the backdrop—the Land Cruiser SE Concept on the right and what is believed to be the all-new FJ Cruiser on the left.

The new FJ Cruiser is expected to incorporate design elements from the Compact Cruiser EV. Japanese media reports indicate the vehicle will measure 4,595mm in length, 1,850mm in width, and 1,900mm in height, with a wheelbase of 2,690mm—comparable to the three-door Land Cruiser Prado 150.

The exterior will retain its boxy and rugged appearance. The front will feature black matte panels and raised sections near the C-shaped LED lamps. However, some elements may be modified in the production version for pedestrian safety.

Similar to the new Land Cruiser and Prado, the FJ Cruiser is expected to feature square matrix headlights. Retro-style round and square headlight options, like those on the new Prado, may also be available.

The side profile is expected to mirror the Prado's trapezoidal window design, offering a wider side view for improved off-road visibility. Rugged fender flares will highlight its off-road nature. The rear doors may feature color accents inspired by the Compact Cruiser EV concept, paying homage to the previous-generation FJ Cruiser’s open-door design.

At the rear, the new FJ Cruiser is likely to adopt a vertical taillight layout similar to the Prado. The tailgate will feature the iconic 'TOYOTA' lettering, maintaining continuity with the front-end design. Silhouettes from the Land Cruiser 250 launch event suggest an external spare wheel option.

Interior & Technology

There are no official images of the interior yet, but reports suggest it will closely resemble the new Prado’s cabin. Expect a 12.3-inch fully digital instrument cluster and a 12.3-inch central infotainment screen, equipped with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

Unlike many modern vehicles that rely entirely on touchscreens, the FJ Cruiser is expected to retain physical buttons for essential functions. This design choice enhances usability, ensuring that drivers can access controls without navigating multiple digital menus—an advantage for off-road driving.

Market & Competition

The new FJ Cruiser will likely compete with the revived Ford Bronco, which has gained a strong following due to its retro styling and off-road capabilities. In today’s diverse automotive market, buyers will not only be drawn to the FJ Cruiser for nostalgia but also for its strong performance and rugged reliability.

As more details emerge, Cartea will continue to monitor developments on the upcoming FJ Cruiser.
