Mazda’s 16th Logo Redesign
For the first time in 28 years, Mazda has updated its logo, marking the 16th redesign in the brand’s history. Since July 2024, Mazda has been in the process of registering this new trademark, and by December, all 45 trademark categories had been officially secured.
The refreshed logo retains the signature ‘M’ monogram but adopts a sleek black-and-white design with Mazda’s custom MAZDA Type font.
What’s New?
While staying true to the ‘M’ monogram that’s been in use since 1997, the new logo has been fine-tuned with a lower center of gravity, straighter lines, and a more rigid structure. The metallic finish has been replaced with a flat, monochrome look, giving it a modern, minimalist appeal.
Mazda has also refined its typography, standardizing all letters to uppercase "MAZDA", creating a cleaner and more contemporary visual identity.
Mazda’s Logo Evolution Over the Years
Mazda’s emblem has undergone numerous changes throughout its history:
1954: The first English logo featured "MAZDA" in uppercase, with blue and white tones.
1959: A new design introduced a white circle with a thin red border, a handwritten lowercase "m," and "MAZDA" displayed below.
1991: A diamond symbolizing sunshine and innovation was added, enclosed within a blue oval with "Mazda" in mixed case underneath.
1992: The logo was slightly refined with a thinner, rounder shape, though the colors and lettering remained unchanged.
1997: Mazda debuted the winged “M” emblem, still used today, featuring a V-shaped pattern intersected by an oval.
2015: Minor adjustments lightened the "M" shape and lettering, while a blue stroke was added to the font.
2018: The blue outline of the letters was switched to black, becoming the standard until now.
A Fresh Look for a New Era
Along with the logo update, Mazda has also registered the Mazda Driving Academy trademark. The MAZDA Type font, which has long been associated with the brand, is now officially adopted for all branding materials, including the logo. The boldest version of this typeface is used, ensuring a strong and distinctive presence.
his clean, minimalist design not only modernizes Mazda’s image but also improves visibility on smartphones, websites, and digital platforms, enhancing user experience and strengthening brand recognition.
Why Change Now?
With the rapid shift towards electrification and smart technology, the automotive industry is undergoing unprecedented changes. A new generation of younger consumers—who value personalization, innovation, and technology—is now driving the market.
Mazda’s refreshed brand identity aims to connect with these consumers, offering a bold and modern aesthetic that reflects the company’s vision for the future.
So, what do you think? Do you prefer the old logo or the new one?
