Toyota has announced that the company's sales fell again in August as sales in China and Japan declined, following a halt in the growth trend. In addition, scandals in Japan and recalls overseas have also impacted the company's output.
In terms of specific figures, global production at Toyota (excluding Daihatsu Motor and Hino Motors, but including the Lexus brand) fell 11.2 per cent year-on-year to 709,571 units in August, and was down for the seventh consecutive month, while global sales also fell 3.1 per cent year-on-year to 826,863 units.
By region, in the Japanese market, Toyota sales fell 9.1% year-on-year to 109,505 units in August, due to the impact of the previous scandal of falsified vehicle safety certifications, which led to the suspension of the production of related models.
In Mainland China, Hong Kong and Macau, Toyota sales fell 13.5 percent year-on-year to 152,065 units, despite strong demand for models such as the Granvia compact van. This was mainly due to the fact that local Chinese automakers such as BYD are rapidly gaining market share.
In terms of power type, Toyota sold 12,682 all-electric vehicles in August, up 6.8 per cent year-on-year, of which all but 119 were sold in Japan, while sales of hybrid models rose 22.4 per cent year-on-year to 336,848 units. Although demand for Toyota's electric vehicles has remained steady and plug-in hybrid models have regained popularity in the market, the company has had to contend with declining global new car sales and fierce competition in China.
EV penetration in Japan has been slower than in other major markets due to the dominance of hybrid and petrol vehicles in the market. Declining global demand for electric vehicles has also led some major automakers to scale back electrification targets. Last month, Toyota Motor cut its 2026 sales target for all-electric vehicles to 1 million from 1.5 million.
Including subsidiaries Daihatsu Motor and Hino Motors, Toyota Motor Group's global production declined 12.6% year-on-year to 808,023 units in August, while global sales fell 3.7% year-on-year to 888,689 units in August, following a 0.7% increase in July.
