Recently, Toyota's solid-state battery plan was approved by the Japanese government, and production is expected to begin in 2026, with Toyota expected to be one of the first automakers to launch a solid-state battery-powered passenger car.
However, Toyota's solid-state batteries will have limited initial production capacity, which is expected to increase only by 2028, with large-scale production opening in 2030.
Toyota says its solid-state batteries will have faster charging speeds, with a full charge expected in 10 minutes and a WLTP range of up to 1,000km and expected to exceed 1,200km.
In addition to Toyota, Chinese brands are also trying to develop solid-state batteries, including SAIC and GAC; the solid-state batteries developed by SAIC will be the first to be used in the MG brand's models, with the new car expected to be released in the second quarter of 2025; and the all-solid-state cells developed by GAC will be the first to be used in Hao Platinum models, with a timeline of 2026.
