The name Toyota Starlet is closely linked to small hatchbacks that were the predecessors to the Yaris. Now, Toyota has decided to introduce a city SUV in South Africa, called Starlet Cross. The vehicle's appearance is familiar as it is another case of badge engineering between Toyota and Suzuki. This SUV shares its platform with the Toyota Urban Cruiser Taisor and Suzuki Frunkx in the Indian market. In terms of design, the three models are almost identical. Toyota's distinguishing features are limited to the front bumper, badges, and LED units in the split headlights and full-width taillights.
The reason for the name change is likely because South African buyers are already familiar with the Starlet, making Starlet Cross a more suitable name for the vehicle than Urban Cruiser.
The 3995 mm long Starlet Cross is based on the Suzuki Heartect platform. The only engine option available in South Africa is a 1.5-liter petrol engine producing 103 horsepower and 138 Nm of torque. Buyers can choose between a 5-speed manual transmission or a 4-speed automatic transmission. In both cases, power is sent exclusively to the front axle.
Meanwhile, the Toyota Urban Cruiser Taisor and Suzuki Frunkx in India come with a 1.0-liter turbo hybrid engine alongside a 1.2-liter petrol and gas engine.
The Starlet Cross offers a 7 or 9-inch infotainment screen, three USB ports, and wireless charging. The base XR version is quite basic with only two airbags, while the top-spec XS version is updated to six airbags. Neither version is equipped with ADAS systems, other than Hill Assist Control.
In South Africa, the price of the Toyota Starlet Cross ranges from $16,226 to $19,422. This makes it significantly more expensive than the Toyota Urban Taisor in India, which sells for between $9,231 and $15,553, despite having different engine options.
