It has been 17 years since Nissan launched the latest GT-R model, which was a significant achievement. This model featured an intelligent all-wheel drive system, making it incredibly fast on the road, especially when it was first introduced. It also looked stunning and benefited from a lot of modern technology. Now, however, it is about to exit production, and an executive from Nissan has just shared what we can look forward to in the future.
This executive is Matthew Weaver, an award-winning designer and Vice President of Design for Nissan in Europe. Speaking recently, he revealed that the next GT-R will feature traditional Godzilla elements in its design. Despite this somewhat vague statement, there is much to glean from his comments. He openly admitted that with projects like the GT-R, it is important to rely on familiar details.
He said, “The important thing about the GT-R is that it must perform well in every part of the car: aerodynamics, speed, and performance. This will define the car and its capabilities. The GT-R has never been about winning beauty contests in design because it is ultimately a very functional vehicle. I remember working on its last versions, where we spent days and nights in wind tunnels, and I had never done anything like that with any other car. So, these aspects will undoubtedly define how the next car will look.”
He adds, “Moreover, we will add certain elements from 'Godzilla' cars wherever we can. Expect some deviations in design from the R35 models aimed at achieving speed, downforce, and cornering ability. At the same time, don't be too surprised to see four round taillights or some sharp headlights at the front. But as long as it works well with the car's functions, it could be the DNA that connects this next generation to the past.”
