Recently, to replace the traditional A4/S4 models, Audi has officially launched the new A5 and S5 models with a range of mild hybrid engines, and the new models will be offered in sedan and Avant versions. Previously, the traditional A4/S4 models relied heavily on conventional internal combustion engines and the A5 range was mainly available as coupes and convertibles.
This shift aims to simplify Audi's model lineup, with the company hoping to keep odd numbers for gasoline vehicles and even numbers for electric vehicles. The new model not only replaces the A4 sedan and Avant but also takes the place of the A5 Sportback. The A5 sedan now features five doors, including a practical rear hatch.
The new car boasts a more dynamic design, showcasing numerous details and improved dimensions. The A4's design faced criticism for its gentleness compared to competitors like the BMW 3 Series and the Mercedes-Benz C-Class, prompting Audi designers to elevate the car's design with the transition to the A5. Key features include a more aggressive overall design, wide fenders, and sleeker LED headlights surrounding a smaller grille, along with larger air intakes in the bumper. Furthermore, the rear lights have received technical upgrades using luxurious OLED screens.
The new A5 is the first production model based on the new PPC platform, which is an upgraded version of the MLB Evo platform. The new vehicle has a wheelbase of 2900 mm, providing an additional 68 mm of space compared to its predecessor. While specific details about the overall length and width have yet to be revealed, it is expected to be larger based on the extended wheelbase.
Inside, the car has undergone a comprehensive and modern overhaul. Audi has eliminated button clutter in favor of a simple and sophisticated design, packed with standard features that elevate the A5's competitiveness. The centerpiece is a curved panoramic display that combines an 11.9-inch digital instrument cluster and a massive 14.5-inch touch screen for the Audi MMI infotainment system. The improved head-up display helps keep the driver's eyes on the road, while the optional 10.9-inch screen for the front passenger adds a touch of luxury. Audi has also promised greater cabin space than before.
The new A5 does not come as a fully electric vehicle but offers a 2.0-liter four-cylinder TFSI turbocharged engine with an improved combustion process for greater efficiency. In Europe, the power comes in two versions: 148 horsepower for the front-wheel-drive version or 201 horsepower for the quattro version.
The second option in Europe and select other markets is an updated 2.0-liter TDI turbo engine, featuring the new 48-volt MHEV plus system. This new light hybrid system maintains emissions control. The base engine generates 201 horsepower and 400 Nm of torque, while the electric motor provides an additional 24 horsepower. This translates to smoother acceleration and better fuel economy. The hybrid TDI engine is paired with a dual-clutch automatic transmission, with options for front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive.
The S5 features an updated 3.0-liter V6 TFSI engine with mild hybrid treatment, producing 362 horsepower, which is 13 horsepower more than the previously introduced S4 and S5. All this power is directed to all four wheels via a S tronic dual-clutch automatic transmission. Audi claims that the developed suspension and steering systems offer "more precise handling," and the optional adaptive suspension system provides a wider range of comfort to sporty performance.
The new Audi A5 and S5 will be available for order in Europe later this month, with the first deliveries expected in November. In Germany, the starting price for the Audi A5 sedan is $49,279.
