Hyundai is recalling the 2024 Santa Fe models again due to airbag issues and has also suspended new vehicle sales. The problem involves the second-row airbags, which may inadvertently deploy or fail to deploy in the event of an accident.
This recall affects 49,719 Santa Fe and Santa Fe Hybrid vehicles manufactured between December 2023 and July of this year. The safety recall report states that the main wiring harness for the floor may contact the second-row foldable seat hinge assembly, leading to damage. If this occurs, it could result in "inadvertent airbag deployment and/or inability to deploy airbags during an accident."
This increases the risk of injury or death, and the problem is attributed to inconsistent wiring placement as well as improper securing of the wiring in place. As part of the recall, the company’s technicians will inspect and properly secure the wiring. If the wiring is damaged, it will be replaced at no cost.
The recall follows reports of unintended airbag deployment in South Korea. This led to an investigation which ultimately identified "eight incidents related to the recall situation in the U.S. market." However, the company stated that no injuries or accidents have been reported.
Regarding the sales suspension order, dealers have been instructed not to deliver vehicles to customers until the recall is addressed. This should not pose a significant issue, as the inspection takes less than 30 minutes to complete.
