Lucid is developing a new model to compete with the Tesla Model Y, which will be priced below $50,000. However, this is not the first electric vehicle of its kind that the company is working on, as the automaker has announced the existence of two other models on the way.
CEO Peter Rawlinson spoke about Lucid’s planned competitor for the Tesla Model Y but did not reveal much about the company’s other models. In a recent interview, Lucid’s Senior Vice President of Design and Branding, Derek Jenkins, noted that the company’s “mid-size program” will consist of “three vehicles.”
The second of these new models is expected to be a sedan similar in size to the Tesla Model 3, and it will need to compete with the Hyundai Ioniq 6, Polestar 2, and BMW i4. As for the third model, Jenkins did not disclose what form this model would take. However, he squashed any hopes of it being a station wagon, indicating that there simply isn’t enough growth in this sector to justify offering a vehicle for it.
He confirmed that he and all the engineers at the company admire wagons but that there is currently not a strong presence, at least not for now. He said that Audi has had many wagons over the years but that this sector is dying even in Europe. Enthusiasts believe that high-performance wagons are great, but there is no concrete evidence of growth in this category.
It seems that Lucid is open to the world of more rugged SUVs. According to Jenkins, the space for off-road vehicles will continue to evolve. This means that Lucid may consider designing a vehicle similar to the Rivian R3X.
