Yesterday, Japan's Panasonic Holdings said its energy unit has completed preparations for mass-producing 4680 electric vehicle batteries, and the company is looking to start supplying batteries to automakers.
The 4680 battery refers to a cylindrical lithium battery with a diameter of 46 millimeters and a height of 80 millimeters, and the capacity of this battery is five times that of the 2170 cylindrical battery.
According to Panasonic, the battery extends the driving range of electric vehicles and would also allow automakers to use fewer batteries to achieve the same battery pack capacity and ultimately lower the cost of electric vehicles, making them more affordable in a wider market.
Panasonic Energy currently provides batteries for many car brands, which includes Tesla, and the battery may be able to lower the selling price of the vehicle once it is mass-produced on board.
