Porsche has reminded us that not only new models can be customized through itsSonderwunsch personalization program, but classics can be too.
During the2024 Monterey Car Week currently taking place in California, Porsche introduced a 993-generation 911 Speedster made for Luca Trazzi, an Italian industrial designer and a collector of Porsche Speedsters.
The 993-generation 911 Speedster had always eluded him, as Porsche originally built just two examples, one for Jerry Seinfeld and the other for Ferdinand "Butzi" Porsche, the designer of the 911.
Those earlier cars were crafted under the original iteration of the Sonderwunsch program, but now such extensive personalization projects are possible again, via the new Factory One-Off option of the latest Sonderwunsch program. This is the most exclusive format of the Sonderwunsch program, catering to all road-going Porsches from any model year.
The customer presents an idea, and if deemed feasible by Porsche, they are invited to a meeting with Porsche designers to finalize the specifications for the build. Bespoke elements are then developed before the build can commence.
For Trazzi's 911 Speedster, Porsche started with a 1994 911 Cabriolet. As an industrial designer, Trazzi already had a clear vision of what he wanted, along with a few design sketches of his own. Even the yellow paint used on the car is personal; it's called Otto Yellow, named after Trazzi's dog.
Like all 911 Speedsters, Trazzi's car features two seats, a more raked windshield, a lower roofline (when the top is up), and a double-bubble rear deck. He also added modern touches, such as the four-point daytime running lights found on current 911s, an infotainment system with Apple CarPlay, and carbon-fiber accents on the dash and center console. Carbon fiber is also used for the seat backs.
So meticulous is the attention to detail that even the switches for the power windows were redesigned to showcase the silhouette of a 911 Speedster.
Power comes from the 3.8-liter flat-6 used in the 993-generation 911 Carrera RS, generating around 300 hp.
