The 2027 Mercedes-Benz GLS-Class is set to undergo a significant facelift, aimed at rejuvenating this full-size SUV's presence in the market. This update will feature refreshed styling and potentially introduce a hybrid powertrain option, with a debut expected in 2026. The current GLS-Class hit the market in 2020 and received a mild update in 2024; however, this second facelift promises to be more substantial, judging by the camouflage seen on a recently spotted prototype.
The prototype is for an updated version of the standard GLS-Class, and testing is also underway for the refreshed Maybach GLS-Class. Underneath the camouflage, a completely new front end is likely concealed, including a new grille, headlights, and fascia. While the overall shape of the vehicle remains consistent with the current GLS-Class, additional changes might be present in more advanced prototypes.
It remains unclear what Mercedes has planned for the mechanical components, but new plug-in hybrid powertrains are a possibility, especially for the performance-oriented AMG GLS 63. The regular GLS-Class may also follow suit like the updated 2025 G-Class, which offers the V-8 engine only in the AMG G 63 variant.
Currently, the GLS-Class is available with a turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-6 engine producing 375 hp in the base GLS 450 model. The GLS 580 offers a twin-turbocharged 4.0-liter V-8 engine rated at 510 hp, while the Maybach GLS 600 shares the same engine as the GLS 580 but with a power rating of 550 hp. At the top of the range, the AMG GLS 63 features a unique twin-turbocharged 4.0-liter V-8 engine producing 603 hp. All models come standard with a 48-volt mild-hybrid system, a 9-speed automatic transmission, and all-wheel drive.
Mercedes typically does not update its vehicles more than once during a product cycle, but this second facelift will help keep the GLS-Class feeling fresh for longer, especially as the automaker plans to extend the sales of some of its current gas vehicles due to slower-than-expected demand for electric vehicles. While Mercedes initially aimed for a full-electric lineup by 2030, they announced in February that they would continue to sell gasoline-powered vehicles beyond that timeframe.
A second facelift is also planned for the smaller GLE-Class, and the S-Class is another vehicle expected to undergo two facelifts to extend its product cycle.
