Since its launch in 2018, the current Mazda3 has gone without any exterior updates for nearly eight years. As Mazda’s only sedan, consumers continue to hope for an upgraded version, and now, an overseas digital artist has created a rendering of the 2027 Mazda3. Rumors suggest that it could be powered by the all-new Skyactiv-Z engine.
The fourth-generation Mazda3 debuted at the end of 2018 and officially went on sale in 2019. Both the five-door hatchback and four-door sedan versions have been widely praised for their aggressive and stylish design. However, much like certain bands that release one great album and then disappear, the Mazda3 has received few major updates over the years, leaving enthusiasts eagerly anticipating a facelift or an all-new generation.
Recently, independent digital artist Digimods Design unveiled a new set of renderings of the Mazda3 sedan, offering a glimpse into the possible styling of a future generation. The new design draws inspiration from the next-generation CX-5, as seen in recent spy shots and renderings. At the front, it features sharp wraparound LED headlights, an integrated grille, a sculpted hood, and a sporty bumper air intake, enhancing its dynamic and powerful appearance.
From the side, the new Mazda3 sedan maintains the height and wheelbase of the current model but introduces redesigned door panels and rear wheel arches for a more modern silhouette. Meanwhile, the rear end sees a more conservative update—although the redesigned trunk lid and slim taillights (borrowed from Mazda’s SUV lineup) add some flair, they fall short of surpassing the refined rear styling of the current model.
For the Mazda3 hatchback, another independent digital artist, MV Auto, has created a set of renderings depicting a more future-oriented facelift. The design takes cues from the electrified Mazda6e / EZ-6 sedan, particularly in the front and rear styling, while still retaining the familiar silhouette of the current model. The result is a blend of Mazda’s signature aesthetic with modernized, fashion-forward design elements.
As of now, Mazda remains tight-lipped about its plans for the Mazda3’s future. However, with the discontinuation of the Mazda6, the Mazda3 remains the brand’s only traditional internal combustion sedan alongside the MX-5. Industry insiders speculate that the next-generation Mazda3 will feature a self-charging hybrid powertrain, positioning it competitively against rivals like the Toyota Corolla. This hybrid system could either be sourced from Toyota (similar to the system used in the CX-50) or be Mazda’s in-house solution for the next-generation CX-5.
Even more exciting is the rumored introduction of Mazda’s newly developed Skyactiv-Z gasoline engine, expected to launch in 2027. Mazda claims this engine will deliver "unprecedented high performance," but while the brand has a solid track record in engine development, it remains to be seen whether the new powertrain will live up to expectations.
As time goes on, we can expect Mazda to reveal more details about the Mazda3’s new platform and design. Until then, enthusiasts will have to rely on spy photos of prototypes and digital renderings to speculate whether this model remains a key part of Mazda’s future strategy.
