Kia is known for its lineup of electric vehicles and attractive SUVs, and is preparing to expand its offerings across all vehicle segments, including passenger cars and light commercial trucks. To this end, Kia plans to introduce models specifically designed for this purpose. At the 2024 Consumer Electronics Show, Kia showcased its electric truck strategy with three concept models: PV1, PV5, and PV7.
The first vehicle to enter production will be the mid-size PV5, which is set to begin production in South Korea in 2025. This will be followed by the smaller PV1, designed for navigating narrow city streets, and the larger PV7, aimed at commercial applications. All three models will feature a unified design language.
With plans to launch 14 electric vehicles by 2027, Kia is preparing to offer everything from delivery trucks to buses and even autonomous taxis.
The Kia PV5 was spotted in prototype form in Europe earlier and appears ready for production. It will retain much of the concept vehicle's design language. At first glance, the vehicle features a design characterized by geometric shapes, numerous lines, and simple surfaces. Notable features include streamlined DRLs that connect to the dual-tone front fascia, with the main lighting units integrated into the rectangular grille graphics.
The vehicle also showcases futuristic touches with a distinctive glass section and traditional rear design, featuring slim horizontal LED taillights. The base model stands at a height of 1900 mm, while the high-roof variant reaches 2200 mm, providing additional cargo space. The flexible “e-CCPM” platform offers different shock absorption styles.
The passenger version features movable seats with advanced connectivity and AI-integrated infotainment features. The delivery version increases cargo space through easy access and low loading features. Additionally, the “wire” steering and braking technology will facilitate advanced driver assistance systems, especially in the robotaxi model equipped with self-driving capabilities.
The vehicle will come with a fully electric setup shared with other Kia electric vehicles and might include a dual-motor version. As the vehicle targets commercial applications, it is expected to provide a balance between the vehicle's features and its load characteristics and protection. Versions that can serve as mobile workshops will also be available.
The PV5 will face stiff competition from a growing list of rivals, including the Ford E-Transit, Mercedes-Benz eVito, and the upcoming Volkswagen ID.Buzz Cargo, all of which are equipped with electric engines designed for commercial and passenger use.
The new mid-size truck from Kia is set to debut next year, with production starting at Kia's new factory in Hwaseong, southwest of Seoul.
