Audi covers almost all types of vehicles, with the exception of lacking a model to compete with the BMW X7 and Mercedes GLS. While Audi's largest existing model is the Q7, which features three rows of seating and competes with the BMW X5 and Mercedes GLE, it has yet to launch a model to rival the BMW X7 or Mercedes GLS. Now, Audi has decided to introduce its new contender—the Audi Q9.
Compared to the Q7, the Q9 will offer more space and an increased focus on luxury, which is crucial in this price segment expected to range from $90,000 to $100,000. Additionally, the Q9 is set to provide a stronger road presence through a combination of its large size, robust body, and distinctive design, featuring a massive main grille, a wide lower grille, and a split headlight arrangement.
The images also reveal a relatively upright rear design, with the possibility of offering a sportback version that resembles a coupe. The Audi Q9 is scheduled for release before 2026, which is expected to be the last year for new internal combustion engine vehicles, although the company will continue to sell existing models.
Audi has assigned even numbers to electric vehicles and odd numbers to internal combustion engine variants for differentiation. This is why the current A4 is being replaced with the A5. The Q9 is expected to offer a mix of mild hybrid and plug-in hybrid powertrains, including a potential 4.0-liter V8 engine. There is also a trend towards plug-in hybrids (PHEV) with long electric driving ranges, which could allow the Q9 to cover 113 km before needing a charge. The Q9 is likely to debut in 2025 as a 2026 model.
