Volkswagen launched an updated version of the Volkswagen Passat for the European and Chinese markets in 2018, named Magotan. Now, this sedan has entered its next generation. Recently, photos released by the Chinese Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) showcased the appearance of this mid-size sedan.
The 2025 Magotan is essentially the new Volkswagen Passat sedan, but it will only be sold in China. In Europe and other regions, the Passat has now transitioned into a station wagon. However, the mechanically related Škoda Superb is still available as a sedan. These revealing photos indicate that Volkswagen has made significant changes to the car's design to better cater to Chinese consumer tastes.
Nonetheless, the design is not particularly exciting. Compared to the European Passat, the Magotan appears to lean more towards a boxy design with a conventional trunk lid compared to the more practical hatchback of the Superb. The rear light design and the extended light bar resemble Volkswagen's ID electric vehicles.
This model, with matte black/gray paint, is the most expensive in the lineup and is classified as a flagship model, with its name positioned just below the side mirrors on the front doors. It features two-tone wheels with a variety of glossy black accents. For those seeking a bolder design, the car will also be available in purple paint.
The new family sedan measures 4990 mm in length, 1854 mm in width, and 1487 mm in height, with a wheelbase of 2871 mm. It also weighs 1684 kg and offers wheel sizes ranging from 17 to 19 inches. The powertrain consists of a 2.0-liter turbocharged gasoline engine with a power output of 217 horsepower.
