At the 2024 Jeddah International Motor Show, the MG Cyberster made its debut.
The new car can accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in just 3.2 seconds and features a double-wishbone front suspension and a five-link independent rear suspension, equipped with Brembo four-piston brake calipers.
Exterior
The design of the MG Cyberster is inspired by the MGB Roadster. The front end is quite distinctive, with very low-set lines and unique large headlight assemblies on either side.
On closer inspection, you can see the circular daytime running lights inside the headlight assembly, which mimic the round headlights of the MGB. The front bumper features a V-shaped design based on aerodynamics to better channel airflow.
In contrast to the front, the side view exudes a more powerful feel, thanks to its two-piece shoulder line and a tapered line at the rear of the door panel. The side skirts of the car incorporate diffusers, and the multi-spoke rims reveal red brake calipers.
The dimensions of the car are 4535 mm in length, 1913 mm in width, and 1329 mm in height, with a wheelbase of 2690 mm.
The rear of the car is quite sexy, featuring a small spoiler that is designed to reduce air turbulence. The rear bumper design corresponds with the front, and the diffuser fins further enhance the sportiness. Notably, the taillights are arrow-shaped, offering high recognizability.
The MG Cyberster features a soft-top convertible roof made of triple-layered specialty fabric, which can open and close in 8 seconds when parked and takes 10 seconds to operate at speeds up to 50 km/h. Additionally, MG has equipped it with dramatic scissor doors that open and close electrically, with adjustable angles ranging from 30 to 76 degrees. To ensure the safety of the opening and closing doors, ultrasonic radars are mounted above and below the doors to detect collision risks and feature an active obstacle avoidance function.
Interior and Comfort
The car adopts a classic enveloping design, avoiding the extreme simplicity found in many electric vehicles.
It features a sporty steering wheel, triple screens, and a center control area tilted towards the driver for convenience.
In the center console, the car features button-based gear shifting, with an integrated touch screen beside it for adjusting settings such as the air conditioning.
It also has "shift paddles," which are actually used to switch driving modes, and a red button on the steering wheel that instantly activates the "SUPER SPORT" mode.
Engine
According to official data, the MG Cyberster offers two single-motor variants, low power at 231kW and high power at 250kW, as well as a dual-motor four-wheel drive version with a 150kW permanent magnet synchronous motor on the front axle and a 250kW permanent magnet synchronous motor on the rear axle, achieving the fastest 0-100 km acceleration in 3.2 seconds.
There are options for 64kWh and 77kWh batteries, corresponding to three models with driving ranges of 501 km, 520 km, and 580 km respectively.
Summary
As a two-seater convertible, the Cyberster stands out in the booming electric vehicle market. Its closest competitor is the gasoline-driven Mazda MX-5 RF, but the MG Cyberster sets itself apart from this modest Japanese sports car, particularly as it weighs a ton more, exceeding two tons.
