Dubai is known for its strict traffic laws, enforced to ensure road safety and smooth traffic flow. Many drivers violate these laws intentionally or unintentionally, resulting in fines, black points, and even vehicle impoundment. Therefore, it is essential for every driver to be fully aware of traffic laws and adhere to them to avoid penalties and ensure a safer driving experience for everyone. Here are ten common violations and how to avoid them.

Speeding

Speeding is one of the most common violations in Dubai, with fines determined based on how much the driver exceeds the speed limit. For example, a fine of up to AED 3,000 can be imposed if a driver significantly exceeds the limit. To avoid this violation, use cruise control on highways whenever possible, stay aware of changing speed limits, and pay close attention to road signs, especially in residential areas where speed limits are lower than on highways.

Running a Red Light

Running a red light is one of the most serious violations, as it can lead to dangerous accidents and injuries. The fine can reach AED 1,000 and 12 black points. In some cases, the vehicle may be impounded for up to 30 days. To prevent this, always slow down as you approach intersections, remain attentive to traffic signals, and be mindful of yellow light warnings.

Using a Phone While Driving

Using a phone while driving greatly reduces the driver’s concentration, increasing the risk of accidents. The fine for this violation is AED 800 and 4 black points. To avoid this, activate hands-free mode, connect your phone to your car via Bluetooth, or pull over safely if you need to use your phone.

Not Wearing a Seat Belt

Seat belts are an essential safety measure, yet they are often neglected by some drivers. The fine for this violation can reach AED 400 and 4 black points. This is not limited to the driver; all passengers, including those in the back seats, must wear seat belts to avoid fines and ensure safety.

Driving Too Close

Not leaving enough distance between vehicles can lead to sudden collisions. The fine is up to AED 400, with four black points. To avoid tailgating, always follow the "three-second rule"—leaving at least three seconds of driving distance between you and the vehicle ahead, increasing the gap in bad weather conditions.

Incorrect Overtaking

Overtaking incorrectly, such as passing from the right, or cutting off other drivers dangerously, exposes the driver to a fine of up to AED 600 and six black points. To avoid this, always use turn signals, check blind spots, and follow designated lanes for safe overtaking.

Obstructing Emergency Vehicles

Obstructing ambulances or police vehicles can delay their arrival to urgent situations, potentially putting lives at risk. The fine is up to AED 3,000 and six black points. Whenever you hear emergency sirens, move to the side immediately and ensure a clear path for first responders.

Driving Without a Valid License

The validity of your driving license should be checked regularly, as the fine for driving with an expired license could reach AED 5,000. Renew your license ahead of time to avoid legal consequences.

Parking Violations

Fines range from AED 500 to AED 1,000, especially for parking in undesignated spaces. Illegal parking in handicapped spots or fire lanes can lead to higher penalties. Therefore, it is best to use authorized parking spaces.

Driving Under the Influence of Alcohol or Drugs

This is one of the most severe violations, with harsh penalties including imprisonment, permanent license revocation, and a fine determined by the court. The best way to avoid this is to never drive under the influence and always arrange for alternative transportation if necessary.
