My Volvo S40's battery seems fine. Why does the electrical system show a fault, and it starts smoking as soon as I start it? We've checked but can't find what's wrong.

Is it a problem with the ignition switch if the Volvo S40 key is turned to the second position, but there's no power and it reports an engine anti-theft system fault? I changed the ignition switch, and now it's sometimes good and sometimes bad. Sometimes the dashboard lights up, sometimes it doesn't, and sometimes it even starts automatically.

If you leave the key in the ignition for too long without starting the car, it won't start. If the key is in the ignition for more than half a minute without turning the engine on, the key becomes stuck and you have to turn off the power and try starting the car again.
