4WD is generally just a tad better than other so-called "intelligent" 4WD systems. It's always engaged with four wheels, with the rear wheels at 0%, so it reacts a bit quicker than the intelligent systems. But don't expect it to be great for off-roading. It's really suitable for family use, for rough surfaces and some harsher roads. If you're thinking about climbing mountains or crossing rivers, don't count on it! Once you've driven it, you'll understand.
